Drosophila melanogaster is widely used as a model organism for investigating a variety of topics in many fields including genetics, cell biology, development, physiology, homeostasis, neurobiology, behavior, evolution and ecology. The Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center (BDSC), established in 1987, provides comprehensive genetic strain resources for the Drosophila research community by acquiring and distributing stocks and stock information generated by individual investigators and large-scale resource development projects. It is the only comprehensive US collection of D. melanogaster strains and is the largest worldwide.
